10/02/2006 - Get Your Money out of Poker Today!!
Big stuff happening in the news today. One of our stupid senators decided that he knows more about what is good for me and my money than I do and decided to attach a bill about online gambling to another unrelated bill to sneak it through congress. So if any of you have any money in any poker or gambling accounts, you need to get it out RIGHT NOW or you risk losing it all....which for some of us could be pretty costly.

10/02/2006 - Alright, Don't Panic....yet
It may not be as bad as I first reported. I have found a few news sources stating that there will still be time for all of us to get our money out. For a good article explaining it all Click Here

I'll let you know more as soon as I find out.

10/02/2006 - My thoughts on the tech game
Well, I know that a few of you are waiting to hear my thoughts on the tech game. The few of you would be the part of my family that only likes to speak up after an upset win over A&M.

Sometimes I forget that my Dad is a tech fan, I'm only reminded of this every other year or so (more lately) when tech upsets A&M. He used to brag about their basketball team and the great Bobby Knight, but for some reason I haven't heard anything in a while.

My aunt also likes to try to rub it in about the game. She's in a slightly (but only slightly) better position to be talking. At least she attended a semester up in that hell hole they call lubbock. I haven't heard anything about whether or not she's actually attended a tech football game...even as a student. Hard to imagine students not going to football games right? Apparently thats common at other schools.

Then there's my grandpa....my dad's dad who posts as "Old Grandpa Miles". He is the only one who actually graduated from tech...or at least spent a significant amount of time there (I can't remember which is right, but I'm sure I'll be corrected). He usually stays quiet about it all. And I'm sure he does so out of wisdom....

As much trash talking as they do, you can always come back with the fact Texas tech has NEVER won a conference title in the Big 12 in football, and NEVER won a title outright in the old Southwest Conference in football.

As for the Aggies, they're a completely different issue. We're going through a horrible era of football here in Aggieland which means that Fran is right at .500 for his career here at A&M (He's won 50% of his games). I haven't decided whether or not he needs to go yet. I'll make my judgement after a few more games. This could be a young team going through growing pains, or this could be the end of the line for Fran. We'll find out over the next couple months.

Either way, 90% of the students, including me, will still be in the stands enjoying the games at Kyle Field standing the entire time and yelling our asses off...which is what makes A&M great.

I wouldn't trade that for a win any day.

10/04/2006 - I Survived the Blackout of 2006
And we all thought it was over yesterday.... For those of you not living in Bryan or College Station this week, enjoy the cool. Those of us in town today are suffering through class in the heat of un-air-conditioned buildings wishing that we had worn shorts and put on extra deodorant.

There was a power outage yesterday afternoon at about 5:30 that sent much of College Station into panic. Many of us soon realized that there is little to do without the help of electricity. We couldn't play xbox, we couldn't get on the internet or turn on a radio to see what was wrong, we didn't even want to drink a beer because we'd have to open the fridge door and let out all of the cool.

As Chris and I were about to hop in the car and make a trip to Wal-Mart to stock up on necessities such as canned goods, bottled water, and more ammo for his guns in case or rioting, the power suddenly came back on.

And, for the most part, life was back to normal. I played some xbox. Chris got on the computer to find out what happened. We even decided it was ok to open the fridge and grab some food. Everything was fine until this morning...

Apparently power was out longer on campus than it was for the rest of the city...and A/C units for every building across campus had to be reset. My first class was canceled because the projectors that we get notes from was not working. But I wasn't as lucky for my second class. He decided to teach a full lecture without A/C, in a small stuffy room full of 300 sweaty college students.

About 30 minutes into class, while I was having a flashback to the equally hot Paris airport we suffered through this summer, I decided to pack up and leave.

It's crazy how much we depend on electricity for everything. Our cooling, our food and drink, our entertainment, and even our college lectures. Never again will I be so unprepared for class, I think I'm going to wear shorts from now on, no matter what the weather outside is like.

10/05/2006 - Coach Miles dominates annual battle against poorly coached Ole Miss team with last second Hail Mary
Oxford, Mississippi - An 81 yard drive with two seconds left was all that stood between the brilliantly coached Arkansas Razorbacks and a win last night. After all was said and done, the Razorbacks pulled through and continued on pace to win a National Championship.

Each team dominated through the air in the back and forth game where Arkansas never even saw a fourth down until the fourth quarter.

With only two seconds left Ole Miss capped an 80+ yard drive with 3 points from a fieldgoal to break the tie game. A pooch kick was fair caught on the Razorbacks 19 yard line where they lined up for one last shot at the endzone.

81 yards later, the game was over, Arkansas had pulled out all the stops to win a game they had dominated from the begining, on a last second "Hail Mary" pass.

The unusally late start time of 12:45am didn't keep the fans from the field to witness Coach Justin Abshire lose yet another game to Coach Miles

Jeff Driver, a local student, said "I'm glad I stayed up for that one. That was Amazing".

As soon as the game was over, Coach Abshire threw his clip board in disgust and retired to his office to watch some reruns of Family Guy.

Coach Miles, in his post game press conference was heard saying, "I don't understand why he'd be bitter about the loss. It's not like he went into the game thinking he was going to win".

10/06/2006 - No Plans for the Weekend
Starting at 5:00pm today, I'm a free man...At least until class starts on Monday morning. All the roommates will be out of town, Jessica will be out of town, and it'll just be me at my house waiting for 11am to roll around and for the Aggies to BTHO ku. It'll be the first time in many many months that I have nothing to do, and nothing planned. So what should I do all weekend?

Leave me some suggestions on what I can do with my time. Would you like to see something new on my website? Would you like me to start on an entirely new website altogether? Should I just sit and play xbox with Touche' all weekend? Give me some ideas.

10/07/2006 - Coaching Staff Brings Apathy to the 12th Man
Many of you know what it means to grow up an Aggie. You wear a maroon bib even before your teeth grow in; you can’t remember a time when you never had an Aggie shirt in your closet and every fall Saturday is like Christmas morning. For the first time in my 22 year old life, I didn’t wake up this morning with butterflies in my stomach on game day.

If you knew me personally, you’d understand how big of a deal that is. I’m a maroon blooded, die-hard Aggie from birth who believes that Texas Tech isn’t our rival, Bonfire should be on campus, and all students should say “Howdy” all of the time. We certainly shouldn’t be struggling to beat Kansas for our first Big 12 win.

Don’t get me wrong, I still yell at the TV like the best of them, and I was certainly yelling today. We finally pulled ahead in a game that we dominated with 34 seconds to go in the 4th quarter. Luckily we didn’t let it go in the final seconds again this week.

Unlike the last three years, our players finally seem to be stepping up. I’m not yelling at the defensive backs to turn around and cover the pass anymore, and I’m not yelling at our quarterback to have some leadership on the field. The players actually look experienced and ready to play. It’s the play calls from our coaching staff that have me and most of the 12th man dumbfounded.

If Jorvorskie Lane can’t be stopped, why not keep giving him the ball? When they start keying on Lane, let’s fake it and run it with McGee. When the other team’s defense starts to step up to stop the run, let’s try to air it out for once. Most high school coaches know this as fundamental football. Fran seems to think his way into bad situations. He over thinks each situation but needs to just sit back and let his players play. His career depends on it.

Hopefully we are all just overreacting, and we can finish the season 13 – 1 with a win in the Big 12 Championship and a BCS bowl. I pray every day for it. But if we have any more close games with teams that are a tier or two below us, we may need to rethink our coaching situation at seasons end…the 12th man deserves better.

10/09/2006 - Tailgating, the t.u. game, Ticket Pull, and More
The last couple weeks without tests have been fun, but it's almost time for the second round...so forgive me if my posts become shorter and farther between during the next week or two. Good Luck to everyone.

For those of you going to the t.u. game with us, Jessica has booked three rooms in Austin for Thursday and Friday nights. Two beds in each room, and plenty of floor space for everyone to pile in. We need to get an exact head count from everyone, and so far it's been a little iffy on who is staying and who isn't. Please send Jessica an email and let her know if you're staying, what nights, and how many people will be joining you.

We pulled tickets this afternoon for the game, and without Heidi's help, we got row 32. She's just better than me, what can I say? So no more first row seats for this game, I guess we'll have to deal with it like everyone else does every other week.

I need someone to take charge of tailgating this week for me. I will be out of town on Friday and won't be back until just before game time on Saturday....so I won't be able to make sure everything is running smoothly. Let me know if you're able to do it, and I'll give you my tents and stuff. Game starts at 2:30 and will be on ABC this week.

I think that's all as far as general house keeping goes. Thanks.

10/11/2006 - Confrontation With the Neighbor
Maybe I just grew up in a sheltered town where everyone is actually pretty cool to eachother, and I'm naive to expect the same thing from College Station. Or maybe our neighbor is just one of those bad apples...

If you don't know Touche', she's one of the most tame, well behaved Golden Retrievers you'll see. I don't have to put her on a leash at night and she'll stay pretty close to me, and never really cause any problems. In addition to that, I walk her at about midnight so that no one is on the street (we don't have sidewalks) or in front of their house to get bothered by her. I carry the leash, but only in case of an emergency or something.

We've had a run in with this neighbor before. Chris and I were walking the dogs one afternoon past his house. Touche' runs about ten feet into his yard to sniff around, then continues on her way. Then we hear someone yell from the garage.

Him: "THERE'S A LEASH LAW IN THIS TOWN. YOU BETTER PUT THOSE DOGS ON A LEASH OR I'LL CALL THE COPS!!"

Us: "We're sorry, we didn't know that was a law. We apologize."

Him: "GET THAT DOG OUT OF MY YARD AND ON A LEASH RIGHT NOW!"

I put her on her leash and just walked away. There's no need to yell at us about it. All you had to do was ask.

And that's why I started walking her at night. She isn't causing any problems, and I didn't want to upset the old man again.

So two nights ago he's sitting by his garage at 12:30am...Touche' is about ten feet from the curb.

Him: "YOU KNOW THERE'S A LEASH LAW!!"

Me: "Call the cops"

Him: "F**K YOU!"

Chill out old man....I guess we're going to have to change our walking route to keep from getting yelled at.

10/12/2006 - New Ads on the Site
I'm sure you've noticed the ads over to the left of the site. I've added them to hopefully generate a little revenue. I get about 50 views a day to this site and hopefully the ads will cover a little of the cost of running it. I pay monthly for web hosting and yearly for my domain name.

I get paid per click on the ads that run on the page from Google. I don't encourage you to click away on them. If they are abused I will not receive any money at all, but if you happen to see something over there that interests you then go right ahead and support my sponsors.

If you have any suggestions or comments about them be sure to let me know on the new comments pages. I think those have turned out very well...made it more fun me to post and for you to read.

I'm thinking about bringing back the message board. It will be designed better so that you don't see 100 posts on one page, and maybe we can have a few different topics.

That's what's new here. I'll keep you informed.

10/16/2006 - Busy Football Weekend
It's been a few days now since I've posted. But I've been pretty busy so I have an excuse.

Jessica and I went home for homecoming on Friday. We went down for the night to see Kayla at the G-P football game. She was on the court, and rumor has it she got second. Congrats.

The game was actually pretty cool. I spent 3 quarters down on the field taking pictures with Jessica's dad's camera. I spent alot of time trying to learn how to adjust the settings, but the poorly lit stadium didn't help my cause any. I didn't have time to look through the pics. I hope I got a few good ones.

Saturday we woke up and left around 8:30 to head back to College Station for the game. We stopped at a little hole in the wall place in Refugio for some taquitos and made it back in College Station just in time to hang out at the tailgate for a few minutes then go to the game.

And a badass game it was....Jordan Peterson is my new favorite defensive player. His hustle play that caused a fumble inside the one yard line set the tone in the game, and was ultimately the difference between us winning and losing. The best news is that he's only a freshman. We have our best years ahead of us. (And hopefully all of the bad years behind us)

Icing on the cake was when we heard the news that tech was being shut out. Haha, where are all the trash talkers now? Anyone? Anyone?

On top of that, Adrian Peterson broke his collarbone and is out for the season. I don't wish injury upon my enemies, but if it has to happen, I'm glad it happened to their star running back before we have to play them. Makes our chances just a little bit better.

Up next is Oklahoma State. We're still deciding if we're going to make that trip.

Saturday was great, but Sunday wasn't nearly as good for me and my football picks. Every week of the season we pick the winners of nfl games. This week I sucked. I didn't get one single game right in the first half of the day. I think I ended up with something like three correct picks for the week. No biggie...Ags still won. There's not much that could happen that would ruin a weekend after a win.

I stayed up late on Sunday to study for my Monday morning test (it should be illegal to test on a monday morning). That combined with the early test made me useless for the rest of today. I had to miss work because of the exhaustion and my 30 minute nap that turned into 4 hours (oops). And now I'm posting instead of studying for my next test tomorrow morning.

Good Luck to me.

10/17/2006 - Something to Look Forward To
Warning: This May Be A Little Nerdy

Last week, while waiting in line for my haircut, I thumbed through a Popular Science magazine. Normally they have all sorts of useless crap filling the pages. They show flying cars, dancing robots, and new designs for a space station that will help colonize the moon. But that day, I caught a glimpse of the future. I saw a picture of these glasses.

These obviously aren't just normal glasses. These glasses somehow project an image into your eye that appears like a screen 3 feet in front of you on the right side of your vision. If you connected these to a dvd player you could be walking through the mall, and watching a movie at the same time.

I didn't think much of the little gadget until they called my name to go sit in the barber's chair. Since I'm the brilliant guy that I am, I spent the next ten minutes brainstorming the possible uses of this device.

What would happen if I stuck this thing into an ipod? I could watch videos without the use of a screen. I'd just be walking down the street and I'd see the video on the right side of my vision.

What if they made an ipod that had the ability to get on the internet and browse the web like a blackberry? (It's coming soon guys) I could be walking down the street visiting HollisMiles.com and posting my blog.

Soon they'll develop ways to make these things smaller so that you don't need glasses for the little screen in your vision. Maybe they could stick them into a contact and make the signals to this new all purpose ipod wireless. Now no one will be able to even tell that you're visiting your favorite website (HollisMiles.com) during class.

Add in an instant messenger service like AIM and you could communicate with anyone around the world instantly, undetected, wirelessly, hands free.

And don't think that it's not going to happen. It already is. These are the things that our kids will be wanting for Christmas. Instead of the new video game that I wanted when I was five. My son will want an eye implant that will play all of his favorite movies and video games without detection. I'll be able to instantly track him using the GPS feature on both of our ipods and send him an instant message to get home now.

More and more people will be able to work from home, or wherever they are in the world, because your office computer is actually in your pocket and can connect to anyone at any time. Now that you don't have to commute back and forth to work, you don't have to buy a few tanks of gas every week solving much of our energy problems.

People will move out of cities and move to places like the hill country, where they can sit and relax in the river while "at work" all day. During my lunch break, I could sit back and watch some cable tv on the web (already here).

The possibilities are endless with technology, and all of these things will happen within the next 100 years.

Don't believe me? Scan back up through this article and look at how many things you wouldn't even have understood 10 or 20 years ago. What's a blackberry? instant message? ipod? video game? website? gps? These things are now part of our every day lives that we all take for granted.

It's crazy to think about what we'll be taking for granted then. It's gonna be fun.

10/19/2006 - It's going to get messy again
If you see anything weird or funny looking on my site in the next couple days, don't click on it. I'm going to be putting in a login system to make my job of editing this site easier...but to make it easy, I have to put in some work now.

You'll know when it's finished (I like to brag). Let me know if anything messes up for you.

10/20/2006 - New Column on Aggiefans.com
I posted a little more than a week ago about some articles I had written for Aggiefans.com. Well, that has evolved a little into a weekly column talking about what is happening in Aggie Sports from week to week. I'll be posting it on here after it is written so that everyone on my site can see it too.

If you have anything that you think would be cool to see in the column, let me know. I'm still throwing together ideas about it. It should come out near the middle of each week.

10/23/2006 - Who Are You People?

I usually get a fair amount of visitors to my site...most are family or friends here in Texas. Occasionally I'll have an extended family (or future family) member visit from out of state. If you're ever interested in seeing how many come to this site, click on the map on the left side of the screen.

You'll notice a map that shows where my visitors are from. You'll also see a counter that says how many visitors have visited since something like September 28th of this year. Click near the top of the map where it says "Map with smaller clustrs". You'll see more detailed dots spread out around the country.

But just yesterday I had a visitor from the middle east (Qatar area) and one from Hong Kong.... Who are you people? Who do I know from there? Those dots really have me confused and wondering how my site has been seen overseas. If you know, post a comment so I can figure this out.

10/24/2006 - I Need Some Nerdy Friends
Hey guys, want to hear what I did this week?   I have been working on the back end of my website using MySQL, php, html, and a few other languages, to make it easier for me to access my databases using a login system on the front end of my site.  I'll now be able to post on my site using my admin privileges that I set up on Monday.

Of course, no one cares, but I'll go home and tell Jessica, Justin, and Chris about it.  Later I'll send Brent an IM, bragging about what I've done....and they'll all just laugh it off like I expect them to.  No Biggie.

I need to go out and find some friends that are more my type.  We can talk about eachother's pocket protectors, and thick glasses, and whatever else nerds like me talk about.

Maybe then I'll finally be able to discuss the formatting or the database back end on my new message board. I can't wait.

10/25/2006 - Learn to Drive...
My rant of the day....Simple Driving Rules.

If you're at a four way stop, and you arrived first, it is your turn to go.

If we arrived at the four way stop at same time, and you are to my right, it is your turn to go.

If it is close, and I wave you on.... it is your turn to go.

Don't sit and stare like you didn't see me.  My windows aren't tinted, and the arm motion I'm making is meant for you to go ahead.  I'm not a third base coach practicing for the big game tonight.  I'm trying to be nice.   It's almost like I'm holding the door open for you.  You could just walk right in.  But instead you decide that it would be nice to wave back.  Now you've wasted 30 seconds of everyone's time and I have to worry whether or not you're going to pull out in front of me when I'm driving through the intersection.

It's really pretty simple.  Learn the rules or get off the road.

10/30/2006 - College Gameday and Aggie Football
College Station is buzzing this week with the news that ESPN's College GameDay will be in town for the ou game this weekend.  Jessica was asking how many times College GameDay has been to A&M to cover one of our games.   So I looked it up...

The only time GameDay was in town was November 11, 2000 against #1 ou.  We were ranked 23rd and came pretty close to knocking off the eventual national champions.   Down by four points, the Aggies took the ball down to the ou 4 yard line, but could not score the touchdown for the win.

Kirk Herbstreet was quoted saying, "There are 85,000 people standing the entire game, waving their 12th Man towels -- it's unreal.  Kyle Field and the 12th Man lived up to, and exceeded every expectation we had for them.  Last Saturday in Aggieland provided, without a doubt, one of the most special memories I'll ever have from College Gameday".

Two years later we went up against #1 oklahoma again.  Reggie came off the bench to lead the Ags to victory and the huge upset.

College Gameday also covered a game back in 1994 between the Colorado Buffaloes and the Texas Aggies.  The Aggies lost that game as well.

So we're 0-2 with Gameday at our games looking to improve on our record.  I think we have a great shot at doing so.

10/31/2006 - Changes to the Site
Well I guess popularity can be good and bad.  I'm happy to say that this past month has been the most popular month I've had with this website since the day it was created in May.  I've had more than 3,000 visits to this site which is even more than the amount that I had after Jessica and I got engaged.

I had envisioned a personal site that only my friends and immediate family would visit occasionally, but now I have had visitors from all over the United States and even in a few other countries.

Due to the site's growth, I have taken down the links to pictures and videos to create a more professional feel to it.  I do not want to have any stalkers in the future, and doing this will probably help with that a little too.

Other than that, I've had a great time with this site so far.  I'd be more than happy to help you with a site of your own if you feel like you'd like to do that.  Thanks for dropping by.  I hope you enjoy what I have to say.

As always, let me know if you have any suggestions or comments.  I'd like to hear them.
